Seit der Einführung durch Neuseeland übernahm eine Reihe von Staaten diese Form der Gestaltung mit Erfolg. In allen Ländern sanken die durchschnittlichen Inflationsraten sowie deren Volatilität während das durchschnittliche Wirtschaftswachstum zunahm. Das Inflation Targeting erscheint auf den ersten Blick als perfekter geldpolitischer Rahmen. Es ist durch die Ernennung eines Zielwertes für die Inflationsrate gekennzeichnet, dessen Einhaltung oberste Priorität genießt. Durch einen erhöhten Rechtfertigungszwang und eine stark verbesserte Kommunikation mit der Öffentlichkeit erhält die Geldpolitik mehr Transparenz und Glaubwürdigkeit. Die regelmäßige Veröffentlichung von Inflationsprognosen dient ihr als Zwischenziel und als Kriterium für Zinsentscheidungen. So erhöht sie die Leitzinsen, falls die Inflationsprognose über dem Zielwert liegt oder senkt sie, falls die Prognose unter dem Zielwert liegt. Die Effizienz der Geldpolitik kann darüber hinaus ex Post überprüft werden, in dem Abweichungen der Inflationsraten von ihren Zielwerten interpretiert werden. Dennoch gibt es auch zahlreiche Kritiker des Inflation Targeting, die vor allem bemängeln, dass es zu wenig Regelbindung unterliegt und zu viel Flexibilität ermöglicht. Inflation Targeting kann aber als geldpolitische Regel verstanden werden, die durch ihren Rechtfertigungszwang und Transparenz eine starke Bindung an das Erreichen ihres Inflationsziels impliziert. Sie ist jedoch kein System mit einer einfachen Instrumentregel, die ihr einen Instrumenteneinsatz strikt vorschreibt, vielmehr kann allein das Inflationsziel als Regelbindung verstanden werden. Somit kann man eher von einer Zielregel sprechen, dessen Einhaltung mit einem Instrumenteinsatz erreicht wird, der alle für die Zentralbank zur Verfügung stehenden Informationen mit einbezieht.
